    About us...

The Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) is an interdisciplinary research centre of the University of Luxembourg. We conduct fundamental and translational research in the field of Systems Biology and Biomedicine - in the lab, in the clinic and in silico. We focus on neurodegenerative processes and are especially interested in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease and their contributing factors.

The LCSB recruits talented scientists from various disciplines: computer scientists, mathematicians, biologists, chemists, engineers, physicists and clinicians from more than 50 countries currently work at the LCSB. We excel because we are truly interdisciplinary and together we contribute to science and society.

Successful candidates will join the Neuroinflammation group, led by Prof. Michael Heneka, which aims at understanding molecular mechanisms of inflammatory regulation in a variety of neurodegenerative diseases, using novel preclinical mouse models and state-of-the-art techniques like multi-photon imaging, transcriptome analysis and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), to develop new biomarkers and medical intervention programs. Your Role...

The Neuroinflammation group at the LCSB led by Prof. Michael Heneka focuses on the role of immune mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases, with a particular focus on Alzheimer's disease.

The research group has an immediate opening for a motivated and talented Laboratory Technician in in vivo imaging (entry- to advanced-level position) with a strong background in working with multi-photon laser scanning microscopy (2 and 3-photon), state-of-the-art imaging analysis and with mouse models of neurodegenerative diseases. In addition to in vivo imaging techniques, tests assessing motor, learning and memory functions will be part of the work. Additional tasks include standard molecular and cellular biology works.

As a general task you will support the group's daily lab operations, including ordering lab supplies, sample organization and documentation. Experimentally, you will assess the in vivo imaging of intracerebral cell activity using several imaging techniques, including, but not restricted to, 2- and 3-photon laser scanning microscopy and assist with the analysis of the acquired data. Additionally, you will assess animal behavior and in particular learning and memory function using sophisticated new video-based and classical learning and memory paradigms.

Important technical competencies and tasks include, but are not limited to:

    • Experience in working with rodent models and FELASA certification
    • Solid experience in multi-photon in vivo imaging and with other microscopy techniques
    • Knowledge on state-of-the-art analysis methods of acquired imaging information
    • Troubleshooting of technical problems related to microscopy and image acquisition
    • Knowledge on animal behavior assessment is considered an asset
    • Experience with standard techniques of molecular and cellular biology is considered a plus
    • Thorough record keeping in a well-organized lab notebook

    What we expect from you...

    • A Bachelor or Master degree (or equivalent) with wet-lab experience in microscopy (especially multi-photon laser scanning microscopy), mouse models of neurodegenerative diseases and in molecular and cellular biology techniques
    • Highly reliable and precise working style
    • Good organizational skills and willingness to work independently
    • Basic computer skills to ensure electronic record keeping and generation of work summaries, e.g., documenting quality and quantity results from different protocols
    • Attention to detail, especially accurate data entry and sample handling
    • Communication in English is essential, both written and spoken

Here's what awaits you at the LCSB...

    • Excellent work environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, laboratory and administrative support
    • Truly connected. We work together with hospitals and research institutes on a national and international level as well as industrial partners. Connection between science and society is very important to us. From our school lab - the Scienteens Lab - to the different outreach activities and collaborative partnerships with patient associations, we love to listen to society's needs and share our passion for science
    • Be part of a multicultural team. At the LCSB we have more than 50 nationalities. Throughout the year, we organise team-building events, networking activities and more
